How to Choose the Correct Bed and Mattress

How to choose the correct bed and mattress

Choosing the right bed is paramount to ensure you get a decent night’s sleep.  The right mattress will mean you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to start your day, rather than with aches and pains or lack of sleep due to tossing and turning in the night.

With the amount of beds and mattresses on the market it can be a minefield knowing which one to buy so getting the right advice will help you to decide what’s right for you.

Did you know the average person spends around 26 years of their life sleeping?  That’s a long time to be sleeping in the wrong bed!

Practicality vs Visual Appeal

Most people would like a bed that matches their bedroom interior so often opt for fancy fabrics and colours but then forget about the most important bit, which is the mattress itself!

Of course it’s preferable to try out a few different mattresses, which you can do in the high street shops, but what about when purchasing from an online retailer?  You can’t check out how they feel before and although you can return a standard size bed, it’s not usually possible to return a bed that is made to order.

So, it’s important you gather as much information by email or preferably by speaking to a member of their sales team before making a decision.  A good online retailer will have well informed people with knowledge about the products to help you make an informed choice.   You don’t want to end up with the wrong one.  You’ll need to check the type of mattress, such as coil or pocket sprung, it’s firmness rating and any extras that add to the overall comfort such as a memory foam topper built in.

Size and Usage

Thank about how much time you will spend in bed sleeping versus watching TV and anything other factors.

If you’re going to be sitting up in bed, you’ll need somewhere to rest your head that is padded, so a headboard would be a good decision in this case.

If you like to stretch out, then a slightly bigger than average bed might be a good idea.  If you’re strapped for space or if it’s for a child, you could opt for a shorter bed.

There are many different variables so you will need to take all of this into consideration.

Adequate Support & Comfort

You want to feel comfortable when you go to bed, so choosing the right bed matters.  For instance, if you have a bad back, or are a restless sleeper, you may benefit from a different type of base and mattress, such as a slatted base or an adjustable bed.

Mattress Conundrum

You may have difficulty on deciding which mattress to go for given there are so many different types and styles on the market.

It is a decision that should not be made lightly as choosing the right mattress will ultimately affect your level of sleep comfort.

If you want something that is long lasting and offers great support as well as comfort then a pocket sprung mattress, maybe one with a memory foam topper built in, would be a good investment.  Because pocket springs are individually packed and work independently of each other, you will not have to worry about rolling towards your partner if they are heavier than you as the weight will be distributed more evenly.

Typically the more springs the firmer the mattress, but filling will also play a part on the tension.  Some fillings are polyester, some have a mix of cotton and wool so these are all things to look out for.

If you do not want to spend too much then opt for an open coil mattress.  These come in various tensions depending on the guage of the spring.  They're usually not as deep as the pocket mattresses.  If you want a mattress for a child or only occasional adult use then a thinner cheaper open coil or child's mattress might be the answer.
