Bed Bugs - How do you know if you have them?

What are bedbugs?

Bedbugs are tiny insects that commonly inhabit furniture or bedding. Their bites may cause itchiness but typically do not lead to other health issues.

How do you know if they're bedbugs?

To identify bedbugs, note that they can appear dark yellow, red, or brown and are about 5mm in length when fully grown. Moreover, they can conceal themselves in various places like bed frames, mattresses, clothing, furniture, behind pictures, and under loose wallpaper.

Indications of bedbugs include bite marks, often found on exposed skin while sleeping, such as the face, neck, and arms. You may also notice blood spots on your bedding from bites or from squashing a bedbug, as well as small brown spots on bedding or furniture (bedbug excrement).

On white skin, bedbug bites usually appear red, while on black or brown skin, they may appear purple and may be more difficult to spot. Some individuals might experience a reaction to the bites, which can be intensely itchy and may result in painful swelling. Although rare, a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) is also possible.

How do you treat bed bugs?

Bedbug bites typically heal on their own within a week or so. To alleviate itching and swelling, you can apply something cool like a clean, damp cloth to the affected area, keep the area clean, and avoid scratching the bites to prevent infections.

To ease bedbug bites, you can consult a pharmacist for mild steroid cream like hydrocortisone cream (children under 10 and pregnant women should seek advice from a doctor before using hydrocortisone cream) or antihistamines if the bites are very itchy and affecting your sleep.

What should you do if you think you have bedbugs?

If you suspect a bedbug infestation, it's advisable to contact your local council or pest control service, as eliminating bedbugs independently can be quite challenging. Although it's unlikely to eradicate bedbugs completely, you can try washing affected bedding and clothing on a hot wash (60C) and tumble drying on a hot setting for at least 30 minutes, placing affected clothing and bedding in a plastic bag and freezing it for 3 or 4 days, and cleaning and vacuuming regularly to spot them early.

Remember not to keep clutter around your bed, bring secondhand furniture indoors without careful inspection, or bring luggage or clothing indoors without thorough checking if you have been to a place known to have bedbugs.

By far, the easiest way to get rid of bedbugs, is to replace your mattress.
